Why Size Matters

Guys, I’m here to tell you, size ALWAYS matters! Just to clarify, I’m talking about the passionate and purposeful “why” for being in business and the “why” that drives you to go after your dreams… as in, “Why Size” Matters. (wink)

Why do big, passionate and purposeful whys matter so much? Your “whys” play a major role in influencing whether your business thrives or fails and whether as an enterprising entrepreneur you persevere or give up. Passionate and purposeful why represent your emotional drivers, which are always more powerful than logical drivers. When you have an emotional attachment to a process or an outcome, you’re much more likely to go the extra mile and not only get to the finish line but run through it with gusto.

When you get down to it, your business is simply the vehicle through which you funnel your passion, wisdom and talents out into the world at a profit. An entrepreneur with unidentified or weak passions and purposes for her business’s existence often has a business that struggles or fails. It’s not enough to simple “do”. You must be crystal clear on the compelling “why” for the doing.

So let’s take a look at your motivation – your purpose - for being in business in the first place. Entrepreneurship ain’t a walk in the park, so you’ve got to have at least one (and hopefully more!) irresistible, underlying reason driving you forward each day. I want to help you get to the heart of what’s important to you about sharing your wisdom or talent and growing a prosperous business around doing that. Let’s get you very clear on your motivation.

What’s driving you forward? If your primary motivation is money, that’s a fine starting point. Money is simply the way we represent an exchange of energy and services. But, if the only reason you’ve started a business is to make money and you don’t have a strong supporting emotional driver, you will likely reach a point of critical discontent when the money is not reason enough to keep you pushing ahead through the mountains of work that make up being in business for yourself.

Leverage Your Why for
Maximum Motivation and Success

Another more practical reason for identifying your compelling “whys” for sharing your wisdom, building a thriving business and creating and offering your products is that those reasons will permeate all of your communications. You don’t have a product or service you feel passionate about? Then your copy writing will fall flat. You don’t feel your business is supporting you fulfilling your life’s purpose? Then you’ll procrastinate about doing all of the tasks you need to do in order for your business to thrive.

Ask yourself: Are you in business because you want more personal freedom? Because you want to get paid for doing something you love? Because you’d rather be the boss than the one taking orders? Do you want to use your business as a vehicle for funding charitable work? When you drill down to the very heart of the purpose for your business’s existence, what is it?

If you’re not yet clear on your why for being in business for yourself (beyond making boatloads of money), here are some questions to help you identify your main emotional drivers:

  • What are you passionate about? What could you do all day long and never tire of it?

  • What is your purpose for sharing your wisdom and gifts through your business?

  • What is the bigger impact you want to have in the world?

  • What motivates you to do what you love doing?

  • How does being in business for yourself affect the kind of life you’re able to create for yourself and your family?

I encourage you to answer the questions above and share them in the comments section below. You can even use the 5 Why’s exercise I discuss in my blog post here to go even deeper with each question. You can even craft your own Big, Passionate Why statement and post it where you see it daily to give you a boost of inspiration.
